Talofa lava!
My name is Hellene Wallwork
I am a young, female civil & environmental engineer.
I am passionate about infrastructural and environmental development as well as promoting career development to young Samoans.
I have recognized the need to help students and graduates with seeing different career pathways and my goal is to enlighten youth on the diversity of career opportunities available to them, especially in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
I am currently in my incubation period to become a member of the Global Shapers Community Apia Hub. Therefore, I serve as a Volunteer to the project working group for Atamai Online. My role is to help promote the website, create content and lend a hand for all our project activities.
During my university years in New Zealand, I became actively involved in student development activities such as mentoring and career development workshops. I recognized the value of this sort of work and the enlightenment it offered students on the different career opportunities available to them. I believe that Atamai online can provide this same enlightenment and guidance to our youth in Samoa, which attracted me to become a shaper.
I am a civil and environmental engineer currently working at the Samoa Water Authority. My role is to help with the planning and designing of new and existing SWA water systems, to provide Samoa with a clean and sustainable water supply.
I would encourage my younger peers to take on engineering as a career choice as it stimulates problem solving, it covers a wide range of interests (e.g. as a civil engineer you would be exposed to work in various aspects such as roads, hydraulic/water systems, structures, etc.) And finally engineering is never boring, you get to experience work life both inside the office as well as out on the field.
When I‘m not out in the field, I enjoy reading, outdoor activities and drinking lots of coffee.
Hellene "in her element".
😍:Love it! Malo lava Hellene
